The Fo Guang Shan Chicago Buddhist Temple held the “2024 Offering-Light Grand Dharma Service and Birthday Gratitude Ceremony.” Following the service, Head Priest Venerable Yung Han provided a Dharma talk, explaining the significance of the “Offering Light,” also known as the “Everlasting Lamp” or the “Inexhaustible Lamp.” She also took the opportunity to mention the recent wildfires in California, calling upon the assembly to pray and practice together for the affected residents, sending blessings and strength to the disaster areas through a heart of compassion.
At 1:30 PM, the temple commenced its New Year spring cleaning. Participants ranging from seniors in their 70s to young YAD members in their teens joined the effort. Before starting, everyone gathered in the Main Shrine to recite the Heart Sutra and “A Prayer for Volunteers” by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Tasks were then assigned to thoroughly clean and refresh the temple, as well as to hang peace lamps together, adding a harmonious and festive atmosphere for the upcoming New Year. The cleaning lasted until after 7:00 PM. Although everyone felt a bit weary, faces were filled with joy, knowing they had collectively cultivated a wealth of merit and were ready to welcome the year 2025.
