On the eve of Thanksgiving, the Fo Guang Shan Chicago Buddhist Temple and the BLIA Chicago Chapter organized a community appreciation visit. Led by Lauren Pittelli, President of the English Subchapter, a group of 10 participants—including Three Acts of Goodness (TAG) students, parents, and youth members—visited the Woodridge Police and Fire Departments. They presented handmade blessing cards and Thanksgiving gift baskets to first responders as a gesture of sincere gratitude for their frontline service.
At the Woodridge Police Department, Chief Alec Sander personally received the group and the gift baskets. He led the students on a tour of the station, demonstrated police equipment, and introduced various types of police vehicles. The children were fascinated by the sirens and onboard equipment, engaging in a lively Q&A session. Chief Sander repeatedly expressed his appreciation for the gesture and commended the BLIA’s spirit of promoting kindness.
At the Fire Department, firefighters accepted the gift baskets and cards before leading a tour of the fire engines and rescue equipment, explaining their daily training and emergency procedures. The students were given the opportunity to board a fire truck and observe the equipment up close, gaining a deeper understanding of the firefighters’ professionalism and courage. As the visit concluded, an emergency call came in, and the group witnessed the fire engine depart immediately with sirens blaring. This moment left a lasting impression on the children, highlighting the urgency and vital nature of fire and rescue work.
Both the TAG students and the YAD members expressed that personally thanking the police and firefighters was a rare and valuable learning opportunity. They not only witnessed the responsibility and mission of public safety workers but also experienced mutual respect and care within the community.
Lauren Pittelli stated that the BLIA has long promoted the “Three Acts of Goodness” campaign and community service, hoping that children learn gratitude through giving. She also extended a sincere invitation to the police and fire personnel to attend the upcoming Lunar New Year and Buddha’s Birthday Open House events at the temple to further strengthen community ties.
