To express gratitude for the long-term support of Dharma protectors and the selfless dedication of volunteers, Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Chicago hosted an “Appreciation Tea” on November 16. More than 40 participants gathered to celebrate the spirit of the season.
Head Priest Venerable Jue Lin expressed her profound moved feelings: “Seeing the decade-long support from our committee members since the temple’s inception, and the dedication of time and effort from every volunteer, is truly inspiring.” During the event, the temple presented certificates of appreciation to those who have supported the community for over three years and gifted volunteers with Liuli (crystal) Avalokitesvara statues. The assembly then participated in a solemn lamp-offering ceremony, reciting “A Prayer for Paramita” by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
As the event coincided with the American Thanksgiving season, Superintendent Venerable You Heng prepared exquisite refreshments. The monastics also shared stories of FGS’s founding and its global propagation efforts. The tea session featured a Buddhist Hymn Karaoke competition, which brought much joy to the audience. The monastics performed songs such as “The Voice of Buddhist Youth” and “Harmony,” while the assembly joined in singing “Ode to the Triple Gem” and “Song of Fo Guang Shan,” expressing their passion for the Dharma through music.
BLIA Chicago Chapter President Mai-Ping Chou shared: “I am grateful to FGS for providing a place for us to practice, and to the monastics for their tireless efforts. The responsibility within the BLIA is an opportunity for learning and growth.” He humorously added that as he was born in the Year of the Horse, he is happy to serve like a “horse or ox” for the benefit of sentient beings, finding joy and wisdom through service.
“Though the work is hard, the achievements are clear for all to see,” remarked benefactor Liang-Feng Wang, praising the global presence of FGS temples. Superintendent Yu-Wen Huang, who has been with FGS for 12 years and served six years as Chapter President, reflected: “Without the Dharma and FGS, I wouldn’t have understood the true nature of phenomena. I am grateful for the chance to practice the Four Givings and the Six Paramitas, which have guided me toward the light.”
Senior member Zong-Xian Xu recalled the early days of building the temple, noting that his commitment to helping the temple was a commitment to Buddhism itself. Edna Haverkos, originally from the Philippines, shared her experience of bringing her four young children to the temple years ago. She expressed gratitude for how the English-speaking community was warmly embraced, noting that her American husband has also joined the volunteer ranks, making their service a joyful family affair.
