The First Subchapter of the BLIA Chicago Chapter organized an outdoor Zen retreat at Starved Rock State Park in Illinois, with over 30 members and friends participating joyfully. Along the journey, the group sang Sounds of the Human World songs together. Known for its eighteen canyons, waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, trails, rivers, and dams, Starved Rock is a premier location in the American Midwest for autumn foliage and diverse flora.

The retreat began with a morning service led by Venerable Miao Wei, who led the assembly in reciting “A Morning Prayer” by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. The Venerable then guided the group through breath-counting meditation techniques, helping restless minds gradually settle into stillness. Following a brief warm-up, the participants commenced their walking meditation (jingxing) along the trails.

Ying-Xue Liu, President of the First Subchapter, expressed her gratitude to all staff members for their collective efforts in making the event a success. Chapter President Ke-Ying Wang remarked on the rarity and value of enjoying such tranquility in nature amidst a busy life. English Subchapter President Stephen Haverkos noted that hiking is beneficial for both body and mind, emphasizing that spreading Humanistic Buddhism is achieved by integrating the Dharma into daily life.

Bin-Xin Wang, a White Elephant Executive of the Chicago YAD, shared her amazement at the majestic beauty of the natural canyons during her first visit to the park. Member Mei-Ying Deng reflected that the meditation session opened up a joyful day for her, while English Subchapter member Trudie Kanter cherished the beautiful memories created by walking and singing with her daughter and fellow BLIA members.

The event concluded with an evening service led by the Venerable, featuring the recitation of “A Prayer for Traveling” to mark a perfect and safe end to the journey.
