Under the guidance of Head Priest Venerable Yung Han, the Third Subchapter of the BLIA Chicago Chapter held its monthly “Journey of the Heart” series on January 27. The theme for the session was the “Four Immeasurable States of Mind: Loving-kindness, Compassion, Joy, and Equanimity,” marking the beginning of a year filled with “Cloud and Water: Ease and Liberty; Harmony and Joy.” Despite the biting winter wind, nearly 50 BLIA members gathered joyfully to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event kicked off with ice-breaking games led by coordinators Adrian Lim and Summer Tung. In her opening remarks, Third Subchapter President Bao-Xi Du reminded the participants to bring a “Zen heart”\u2014one that is warm, joyful, and compassionate\u2014to their meditation practice. Venerable Yung Han then led a session of Humanistic Life Zen, guiding the assembly through relaxation techniques. she emphasized using compassion toward oneself and a spirit of joy and equanimity toward others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Subchapter Secretary Bin Wang reflected that the Venerable’s teachings helped resolve long-standing inner doubts and provided clear methods for stress reduction. Chapter Vice President Yun Guo realized that Zen practice is not limited to sitting on a cushion or watching one’s breath; rather, Zen is present in the “here and now.” Paul Kanter, an English-speaking member, shared that meditation brings peace to the mind, allowing one to feel joyful and at ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the meditation, participants wrote blessings for themselves and others on Bodhi leaf cards printed with Dharma words from the Buddha and FGS founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun. Coordinator Summer Tung received a message from the Master: “One would rather have nothing than be without compassion.” She took this as a personal reminder that compassion is the foundation of both Buddhism and humanity, making it her vow for the new year. The activity concluded successfully amidst warm blessings and laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
