Dr. Lynette Korenic, Director of the Kohler Art Library, accepted the monumental work, expressing deep gratitude to the monastics and BLIA members who drove two hours to deliver this highly anticipated collection. The ceremony was attended by 18 guests, including professors from the Department of Asian Art, library researchers, Superintendent Venerable You Heng, and BLIA Chicago President Mai-Ping Chou.

The Encyclopedia of Buddhist Arts is the first comprehensive collection of global Buddhist art, spanning ancient to contemporary works across five continents. It serves not only as an essential reference for Buddhist aesthetics but also constitutes the “Image Canon,” one of the 16 canons in the monumental Fo Guang Buddhist Canon project. The English edition breaks language barriers, presenting Buddhist art on the world stage through eight categories: Architecture, Grottoes, Sculpture, Painting, Calligraphy, Seal Engraving, Crafts, and Notable Figures in Buddhist Art. FGS is currently donating this encyclopedia to major universities and libraries worldwide to promote the global reach of the Chinese Buddhist Canon.

Venerable Jue Lin shared the origin of the encyclopedia with the gathered scholars, explaining that FGS founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun recognized the importance of Buddhist art early in his monastic life during wartime. Over the course of a decade, monastics and lay followers worldwide collaborated to collect images and data, resulting in the world’s first complete collection of Buddhist art.

Venerable You Heng, who served as the Editorial Director for the English edition, introduced the eight categories and provided detailed explanations of the “Crafts” volume. She demonstrated how students and researchers can use the comprehensive General Index to trace the life of the Buddha or find research inspiration. The donation aims to support academic development and foster a deeper public understanding of Buddhist culture.

Professor Gudrun Bühnemann of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, who recently attended a major academic conference on Buddhist art at Hsi Lai Temple, praised the practical utility of the encyclopedia and personally applied for its inclusion in the library’s collection. She led a campus tour for the guests and invited the monastics to return for in-depth seminars with researchers and students. To mark the occasion, the temple shared exquisite encyclopedia-themed bookmarks with the faculty and staff, looking forward to future collaborations.

[67

post-2653","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-print-news
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",878,659,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",512,384,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",512,384,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",768,576,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",512,384,false],"1536x1536":["http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",878,659,false],"2048x2048":["http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",878,659,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",370,278,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",362,272,false],"great_lotus-thumb-category-@retina":["http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",724,543,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",877,658,false],"trx_addons-thumb-huge-@retina":["http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",878,659,false
http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",770,578,false],"trx_addons-thumb-masonry-big-@retina":["http://www.ibpschicago.org/en-us/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/03_IMG_3127.jpg",878,659,false
["GET
